In the November 2000 general election, the people of Colorado voted to legalize the use of medical marijuana for persons suffering from debilitating medical conditions. Amendment 20 allows a patient to have up to 2 ounces of cannabis in their possession and grow up to 6 plants.

What does this mean for you? Well, if you have one of the qualifying medical conditions then just follow this simple guide to legally apply for your medical marijuana card and you will soon be on your way to purchasing legal weed in Colorado.

First you will need to schedule a medical marijuana evaluation with a state approved doctor. There are many resources for researching and choosing a compassionate doctor across Colorado, so be sure to do the proper research to find a reputable source. It’s best to provide this doctor with your medical records if possible. While this makes the process easier for everyone, it’s not required at many locations.

Your doctor will need to diagnose you with one of the following conditions to be eligible for the official Colorado Medical Marijuana Registry:

Cancer
Glaucoma
HIV or AIDS or a medical condition or treatment that produces, for this patient, one or more of the following and which, in the physician’s professional opinion, may be alleviated by the medical use of marijuana.
Cachexia
Severe Pain
Severe Nausea
Seizures (including those characteristic of epilepsy)
Persistent muscle spasms (including those characteristic of multiple sclerosis)

Once your doctor approves the recommendation, they will need to fill out the Physician Certification Form. Only licensed medical doctor’s in good standing with the state of Colorado may sign this form. Next is your official Registry Application Form. This needs to be signed, dated and notarized in front of an official state Notary. Then you need to include a photo copy of a valid Colorado ID (driver’s license, state ID, etc). Finally, a $90 non-refundable application fee must be paid by an included check or money order payable to CDPHE.

All forms are available for download from the official Colorado Department of Public Health website. Be sure to make photo copies of everything! Then package and mail all the materials to the Registry’s Office within 60 days of the doctor’s signature to:

That’s really all there is to it! Next you will have to play the waiting game because the Registry’s Office is currently way behind on approving new applicants. Estimated wait times can be up to 6 months from when the Registry Office receives your application. The good news is you can use photo copies of all your documents as your temporary proof of registration until you receive your official medical marijuana registry card in the mail.

Selling Marijuana – Is It A Good Business Idea?

In the United States we have the war in Afghanistan, the war in Iraq, the war against terrorism. The purpose of these wars is to accomplish freedom, national defense and security. But we also have the war on drugs. I’m not sure that is a great benefit from the drug war. In fact it may even be a waste of time. We used to have prohibition against the use and consumption of alcohol. Now it’s legal in most places in the United States. In one of the three Conversations With God books by Neale Donald Walsch, there is a discussion about morality and legality. Whether something is legal or not is a matter of time and space. A century ago, alcohol was illegal, but with the passage of time, it has become legal. Prostitution is illegal in most places, but in parts of Nevada it is legal.

Why not legalize prostitution?

In the Bible, the kings all had concubines. From my way of thinking, a concubine is just a live in prostitute. So why to the Bible thumpers think it is so wrong. Most governments, federal, state and local, all have financial problems. Why not legalize prostitution, tax them and regulate them. Avoid the illegal trafficking of young girls and teens. The government is good at rules and regulations. Have them apply for business licenses. Fight the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (stds) by requiring testing. Put them in jail if they don’t follow the rules. Not for just engaging in business. Get rid of abusive pimps. Tax the pimps too. Many people support laws and legislation that would tax legitimate hardworking business people who make a lot of money. While those deemed to be criminals (by current laws) and those engaging in shady practices benefit from tax free money.

Why are we fighting drugs?

The word on the street is that drugs are not controlled because people in high places are benefiting from drug trade. Not to mention all the athletes and celebrities who indulge in the practice. It’s a sign you’ve arrived – to have enough money to get whatever drugs you want. This strategy and perk of the rich did not work out well for Michael Jackson. They are going after his doctor. I believe that the doctor was not trying to kill Michael Jackson. He was just following orders and being reimbursed large sums of money for his services. It was also rumored that others declined to give Michael what he requested. Those with money to burn just move on to someone who will. Michael is the one who wanted to be wiped out every night. The doctor just gave him what he wanted. I know I’m dancing on the edge of the assisted suicide controversy. I don’t see a lot of difference in Michael’s case. And then there are the cigarette manufacturers. They are assisting a lot of people in committing a slow suicide.

What’s wrong with smoking weed?

Being over 50 and from the hippie, free love era, I know lots of people who smoked marijuana, affectionately called weed. I never did that nor cigarettes. It has been reported that 12 American presidents smoked weed, including the last 3: Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Whether they inhaled or not is beside the point, they smoked it. Most people matured and evolved past marijuana smoking, or so I thought. I’m hearing more and more about people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s who are back into smoking marijuana. It’s illegal, so I don’t allow people to do that in my house. But I doubt that pursuing marijuana smokers is a value added activity. It wastes time and resources that could be used to fight real crimes. And apart from that, marijuana has medical uses.

Is supplying marijuana good business?

Of course, no one should blame the Boomers. They just happened to be the largest group to challenge the political and medical communities’ view that marijuana (aka cannabis) was a dangerous drug and its use should continue to be a crime. The establishment ignores the facts. In many countries around the world, marijuana is considered a medicine and routinely used both for inhaling and as an infusion for drinking. But what they do in other countries should have no bearing on what happens in the US. Libertarian arguments that all drug-taking is victimless has also never really taken off. The cost of lost production forces us to pay higher prices for goods and services. The cost of hospital treatment for drug abuse means every taxpayer is a victim. So the Republican “tough on crime” policies have always favored the use of the criminal law to penalize those who abuse drugs. Yet, looking around the US today sees a different landscape. Fourteen states have passed laws allowing the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Leading the way, as always, California has a proposition in the November midterms to legalize marijuana outright. What has happened to produce such a revolution? There are two answers. The first has been a general toning down of the rhetoric in favor of scientific debate. When marijuana was first criminalized back in the 1930s, the medical profession stood together and denounced the drug as a tool of the Devil, tempting people into sin and depravity. Today sees a significant number of doctors singing a different tune. First, a gesture to the traditional group: there is no doubt that smoking marijuana can and does cause lung cancer and, over time, there is evidence suggesting loss of memory and some brain damage. But there is also an impressive body of international evidence proving marijuana highly effective in giving pain relief. The use has to build up over at least six months. Once a stable concentration is achieved in the blood stream, it relieves chronic pain from arthritis, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis and cancers. The second justification is fiscal. The sale of medical marijuana already makes a significant contribution to state funds through the tax system. In a recession, all contributions are gratefully received. If the outright legalization goes through in California, it is estimated the annual tax take will rise from about $200 million to $1.5 billion. It will also lead to a better system of regulation so that, like alcohol, its distribution can be controlled. None of this changes the need for “conventional” drugs to relieve pain. Tramadol in its different forms will remain the first response to moderate to severe pain. But in chronic cases, the continuing use of any drug can lead to dependence and the debate shifts. Which of the drugs is better when use may be indicated for years? In the fourteen states with Illinois perhaps about to join them, the option of marijuana rather than tramadol is there to be freely made. Legalization has undermined the criminal gangs and reduced prices. The quality of the product is also guaranteed whereas, on the street, marijuana can be cut with many strange and sometimes dangerous substances. This is the practical reality on the ground and there is no point in trying to turn the clock back. Pain management in these states now includes marijuana. However, it does make you lazy. And when you are lazy nothing gets done.
